Boys, gals, bubs, apes, ape-ettes, please excuse my recent silence – I am sending in this entry to assure our millions of fans that I am around and am mostly healthy.
I decided to hijack Side B of our 8th mixtape and send out a certain kind of vibe this evening. As my colleague Art did while reminiscing of the pleasant memories of New York, a cultural mecca with all its urban charm and random violence/muggings, I’ll be reminiscing on the past season as we say farewell to the long days and welcome the long nights.
There’s something about the air when Fall comes around. The noise from the hotter months is faint now, and there seems to be a constant smell of smokey wood-burning in the distance. We’re at that transition point where midday is warm and still feels like an old sun-stained postcard from paradise that was left by the window sill while the following twilight reminds you of the freezing desolation to come. I have the sudden urge to drink heartier ales and spend more time in places that qualify as “taverns”. It’s all a bit eerie.
Bears have the right idea – Around now, most of them start hibernating and don’t come out until April. That’s so rogue. What a life. Just an apex predator killin it in the woods – salmon platters, honey, maybe the occasional jaunt into a campsite to scare people and drink all their booze. Then when it gets a bit chilly, they just dip for 6 months. What a savage. I sometimes wish I could do the same (I do go on the occasional belligerent jaunt into stranger’s campsites, actually), but we apes must push onward.
Well cheers to the Summer, what a lovely girl. She was a hot mess and burned me a few times along the way but I don’t regret any flings. Hopefully this tape captures the feeling of long night drives, hearty ales, quiet taverns, and freezing unrelenting desolation. Stay warm out there.
